I want to keep this blog alive as much as possible, even if it's just to post the tiny bit of update I manage to get done. I think making to do lists and documenting my progress, will help me focus better on my objectives and get me back on track. It's worked wonders in the last week :)</div></div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj359ZMY6jPKnR6j2LbYlvZs8bf0sNfmzkJJ749FmuLNO1zvGJjBoWWY3_aCQU8vkAoaCe-hZWlDQ6KWyngG7Mp2TIQbremWu8UDDjo6HFDyomxab5B8_AhCniH_m_nPb3NfScAEX1QCfKSjKmAO0RfGejhU7tlugkT-1inPZN3x4TpGRVyCPJI8QUcAmgi/s4000/20231222_102947.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3000" data-original-width="4000" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj359ZMY6jPKnR6j2LbYlvZs8bf0sNfmzkJJ749FmuLNO1zvGJjBoWWY3_aCQU8vkAoaCe-hZWlDQ6KWyngG7Mp2TIQbremWu8UDDjo6HFDyomxab5B8_AhCniH_m_nPb3NfScAEX1QCfKSjKmAO0RfGejhU7tlugkT-1inPZN3x4TpGRVyCPJI8QUcAmgi/s320/20231222_102947.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div><br /></div>D1-D2http://www.blogger.com/profile/03520044024915591288noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7213240850696097245.post-58472507971167431062023-12-31T23:30:00.015-05:002023-12-31T23:30:00.135-05:00Looking Back at 2023<p>
Looking back at this last year, 2023 has been the least successful in the
amount of stitching I've done since I started this blog. I'm looking at my
album of finished projects for the year and there was only the Parisian
Patisserie Box offered by the EGA.
</p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<p>Not to say that this is a bad thing. A lot happened in the last year.</p>

I started classes with Margaret Lee, starting two bead embroidery projects
on top of my Japanese embroidery phases

Finally got the chance to meet embroidery friends in person. I'm talking
Canadian, British and Korean stitchers

Managed to see multiple textile and embroidery exhibitions in person. Some
that still makes me want to cry it was so beautiful</li></ul>

All in all 2023 was a busy year, but still a good year. For the last week,
I've been "attending" my annual solo Christmas retreat. I'm taking it slow to
get back into the groove of stitching. So I'll leave you this year with this
tassel that I'm so proud of. I was on cloud nine when it was finished, it's so
pretty. Happy New Year!

I didn't even publish my minimum of one per month with my ORT jar. The reason is simple, there was nothing to share. I've been busy getting ready for my first vacation since 2018. In 3 days, I'll be flying out to Seoul, South Korea! </p><p>I swapped my embroidery classes for an intensive beginners course in Korean as I really want to be able to read and talk to people when I get there. It will be in broken Korean but I'll at least be able to order food on my own. I'll also be meeting with other embroidery students and teachers that I've been in contact with over Instagram. There are two embroidery exhibitions being held in Seoul as we speak with my name on it!</p><p>I haven't entirely stopped making for the last two months, I've just been making things with my sewing machine. Here is one example of something I've made that I will take with me. It's based on a pattern by Aneela Hoey called <a href="https://aneelahoey.com/b/4-pocket-case" target="_blank">4 pocket case</a>.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj31jOvHaYWqpohfOgCj2gTvN3Dnp1LSTziJDocCbp64jVHelbrt0hBNkpI-mxPARmkAMOy23fNtDqBDJtn5ujQ3L25ROWtr7eiMKOahl2HRPbqSdiKo1n1RAIgbye24-ib6ooM48JzH3Ojvblr2QWdUDBiv37f_sriknCWDiXuMvbt4ArQ48iwLmzjXXMq/s12000/20230924_135323.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="12000" data-original-width="9000" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj31jOvHaYWqpohfOgCj2gTvN3Dnp1LSTziJDocCbp64jVHelbrt0hBNkpI-mxPARmkAMOy23fNtDqBDJtn5ujQ3L25ROWtr7eiMKOahl2HRPbqSdiKo1n1RAIgbye24-ib6ooM48JzH3Ojvblr2QWdUDBiv37f_sriknCWDiXuMvbt4ArQ48iwLmzjXXMq/s320/20230924_135323.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>It has a few imperfection and is a little wonky, but I'm so happy with how it came out as there were so many firsts involved. I put in my first zipper, used vinyl for the first time, added a binding with corner. I really love it as it's the right size to fit an A4 cross stitch pattern, fabric, threads and all my stitching tools.</div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhT2HW5kOBxUpq5B4sVTHbs6_GRW_StcETd93Dpl7_MmHtUT8h_RQLaSWdGaxr0amPoVYsYWcr8NCAiNfjQluVfQrS40mMZJeEaZK2Nq34orMj18yei1GC7L9QNH3kr_Bag7_jqrojR3d_vWHoB5yHiibpsLXyeQAbV7hKZLRlP8I1dJNjmfE7HnL5SG8wM/s12000/20230924_140052.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="9000" data-original-width="12000" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhT2HW5kOBxUpq5B4sVTHbs6_GRW_StcETd93Dpl7_MmHtUT8h_RQLaSWdGaxr0amPoVYsYWcr8NCAiNfjQluVfQrS40mMZJeEaZK2Nq34orMj18yei1GC7L9QNH3kr_Bag7_jqrojR3d_vWHoB5yHiibpsLXyeQAbV7hKZLRlP8I1dJNjmfE7HnL5SG8wM/s320/20230924_140052.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>I was initially going to take a different piece with me, but sadly despite ordering early the materials have still not arrived in time. So here's the kit I'll be taking with me instead. It's based on Alphonse Mucha's Brunette. It came with 16ct aida fabric which I've already swapped out for a 32ct. I'll probably concentrate on the stitching the frame around the portrait during the long flights.</div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJEIMX1hY1gT7k7uX0VIY7SL1BqY0E4vkbUD1-mjRP06BbYx2X6dXmcxz67G9RILSbdI_8VqzEnvs7onfKQ8dj8j5OFQd2QKvnp5gqFIOVsmRq_j2w0wW1MNsk8KsK6mKNyOssQ74Av9tALM1H3uitnszcCTPpVuGLa6DNQmTJdv7P5tRwtjjmWwmdeKCW/s12000/20230924_140145.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="12000" data-original-width="9000" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJEIMX1hY1gT7k7uX0VIY7SL1BqY0E4vkbUD1-mjRP06BbYx2X6dXmcxz67G9RILSbdI_8VqzEnvs7onfKQ8dj8j5OFQd2QKvnp5gqFIOVsmRq_j2w0wW1MNsk8KsK6mKNyOssQ74Av9tALM1H3uitnszcCTPpVuGLa6DNQmTJdv7P5tRwtjjmWwmdeKCW/s320/20230924_140145.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div>D1-D2http://www.blogger.com/profile/03520044024915591288noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7213240850696097245.post-50344954265841091142023-07-14T14:23:00.002-04:002023-07-14T14:23:30.967-04:00June TUSAL<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://itsdaffycat.blogspot.ca/2018/01/a-totally-useless-stitch-long.html" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-33ZTNbue5P4/T8rU1pBgJZI/AAAAAAAAAJg/lvs5exXzIyg/s1600/tusal.gif" /></a><span style="text-align: left;"> </span><span style="text-align: left;"> </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjabYvoahprNpcx2G4wlP3XXlf65nJ4iowg8-vk8rmqtg853Jj0TlyvoRzS_jDUoI87s_X00WPajv9KrwVmQFE-N_XaAJV5htkLl0yPB1tiN4aCxdZVwiTqMKcPhqtaYunYZi2NTydhBwXkskHycO6UZXQvFgviOGba1TvJ8U3wa9DOZWZ_tn44q9AtTzWn/s12000/20230705_085627.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="12000" data-original-width="9000" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjabYvoahprNpcx2G4wlP3XXlf65nJ4iowg8-vk8rmqtg853Jj0TlyvoRzS_jDUoI87s_X00WPajv9KrwVmQFE-N_XaAJV5htkLl0yPB1tiN4aCxdZVwiTqMKcPhqtaYunYZi2NTydhBwXkskHycO6UZXQvFgviOGba1TvJ8U3wa9DOZWZ_tn44q9AtTzWn/s320/20230705_085627.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">My June ORT jar was very poor last month. I'm ready to start putting together the body of the wallet but am missing a few things, like the ribbons and buttons. I've placed an order for one but can't find the other. The buttons needed are 7mm flat two hole buttons which is really tiny, and I need three of them. I haven't been able to find anything online, my best bet is to hit the local flea markets and haberdasheries, and pray! So if anyone knows of a good source, please reach out.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0ML9VPZJaMMvbBa0Jhqv3o6MgS0rMTZeoZM6XYt66AsY5TDY_01fVswmN2biRFfbEUeiuS9WDLWBZombzAEHQ88HOr8WHy3sFhVBQE-rNi5s_JYG2WcPZc78nGpupuXC_Ef_Z2GEUdzlHCrzmuJrdV_CVIykVtDx4UffRSTER3jmIe5Zek__qJVw2OqeW/s9919/20230706_103133.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="9919" data-original-width="9000" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0ML9VPZJaMMvbBa0Jhqv3o6MgS0rMTZeoZM6XYt66AsY5TDY_01fVswmN2biRFfbEUeiuS9WDLWBZombzAEHQ88HOr8WHy3sFhVBQE-rNi5s_JYG2WcPZc78nGpupuXC_Ef_Z2GEUdzlHCrzmuJrdV_CVIykVtDx4UffRSTER3jmIe5Zek__qJVw2OqeW/s320/20230706_103133.jpg" width="290" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div></div>D1-D2http://www.blogger.com/profile/03520044024915591288noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7213240850696097245.post-43729150702482011002023-06-12T15:00:00.003-04:002023-06-12T15:00:00.141-04:00May TUSAL<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://itsdaffycat.blogspot.ca/2018/01/a-totally-useless-stitch-long.html" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-33ZTNbue5P4/T8rU1pBgJZI/AAAAAAAAAJg/lvs5exXzIyg/s1600/tusal.gif" /></a><span style="text-align: left;"> </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqhqziCpzPn_GTCXvhMPrsyrV9ai4ExAEygfZ8PzRhmpkxDBsVU85I6_z_8es6Zc_TcKCSs3BuBQ9Np_KR7NAyXQWczQ6jE0XKIfVMm3kVNwMtzimwy0GrSyX0HbmWHIVSbVdD5ypgaSvi18QFcFrGEg2l7e17dBt7KsvyQm894NDDr6_TcYWPrGIJng/s12000/20230602_094636.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="12000" data-original-width="9000" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqhqziCpzPn_GTCXvhMPrsyrV9ai4ExAEygfZ8PzRhmpkxDBsVU85I6_z_8es6Zc_TcKCSs3BuBQ9Np_KR7NAyXQWczQ6jE0XKIfVMm3kVNwMtzimwy0GrSyX0HbmWHIVSbVdD5ypgaSvi18QFcFrGEg2l7e17dBt7KsvyQm894NDDr6_TcYWPrGIJng/s320/20230602_094636.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">If you read my previous update, you'll understand why I posted my TUSAL report late. Way back when Margaret Lee released her
<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Art-Bead-Embroidery-Japanese-Style/dp/099231447X" target="_blank">book</a>
on Japanese bead embroidery, I purchased the kit for one of the designs from
the book. It was purple, so I really couldn't resist. I always planned to
stitch it one day on my own, but with Margaret's shift to online teaching, a
great opportunity was presented to me. A few of my stitching friends also had
this kit in their stash, so why not organize a class.
</p>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We were a class of five students from Canada and one student from the US. Two
of us had purchased kits directly from Inspirations and the other students
purchased their kits directly from Margaret. Some are even doing this piece is a beautiful dark blue. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">While prepping for class, we
discovered that the kits were not all made up the same when it came to the
fabric.
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>
My kit from Inspirations came with two pieces of fabric, one for stitching
and one for lining. The design was not transferred, but chaco paper was
included to make my own transfer
</li>
<li>
My friend's kit from Inspiration came with two pieces of fabric, one for
stitching and one for lining. The design was transferred (not printed) on
the fabric. We asked Margaret about this later, apparently there is an
early batch where they assumed stitchers would follow her instructions
from the book to do their own design transfer. This was changed right
after
</li>
<li>
Those who purchased kits from Margaret had 3 pieces of fabric, one for
stitching the main body of the purse with design pre-printed, one for the
sides and one for the lining
</li>
</ul>

My preference for design transfer is tissue paper and running stitch. Yes, it's
more time consuming, but it's more accurate and it's really easy to make
design changes during stitching as the lines are temporary.

bugle beads and aiko beads.

The class was taught in three lessons, with tutorials in between and a final
consolidation lesson. In the first lesson, we looked at the feathers which
make up the main elements of the piece. I'm treating this piece as an opportunity to expand my bead embroidery skills and learn those "extra" things to do to get my stitching to the next level. One of the things I learned in this lesson is how to properly angle my "stitches" to create movement. A lot of the theory goes back to the separated single layer and long and short techniques in Japanese embroidery, so what I am learning here will be a definite benefit when I go back to my silk embroidery. I'm really comfortable with the separated single layer, but the long and short is still giving me some trouble.</div>
<br />

</div>
<div><br /></div><div>Here's another thing I learned in lesson 1: a better way to stretch my fabric. I usually prefer to use a Japanese frame when beading but I have too many on the go right now and wanted something lighter, so I opted for my slate frame. I could not get it to stretch tightly enough and when I did I had a sort of "bowing" along the edge of the fabric. Margaret showed us the method she uses for her Chinese embroidery and it's fantastic. If you have a copy of her <a href="https://www.amazon.ca/Art-Chinese-Embroidery-Foundation-Level/dp/0980876788" target="_blank">Art of Chinese Embroidery</a> book, the method is described under the framing up process.</div><div><br /></div>

In goldwork, I learned from Alison Cole to create K's with the chipping to ensure a random look. Margaret suggests we create triangles with the beads. I think both in the end achieve the same results.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div>

<div><br /></div><div>We have one final consolidation class in August. It's basically a last chance for students attending this class to ask Margaret questions on this piece if they needed help. Since we've covered all the techniques, I went back to stitching the feathers as those should be completed first before moving onto the next part. The correct order is:</div><div><ol style="text-align: left;"><li>Feathers (filling stitches for feathers could be done at this step or later)</li><li>Redo outline of overall piece</li><li>Couched lines</li><li>Right diagonals</li><li>Filling stitch</li></ol></div>

The class was taught by <a href="https://www.sarah-stitches.com/" target="_blank">Sarah de Rousset-Hall</a> and covers the box making method used by the Royal School of Needlework, which is different from the cartonnage method. We were given the option to purchase either a full kit, which included things like a cutting mat, ruler,... or a partial one. I opted for a partial kit as I was already equipped for cutting mount boards, what I was more interested is a sample of mount boards appropriate for box making. This will be useful to help track down more later. The fabric and threads are just a bonus allowing me to start the class sooner.</p>

<div><br /></div><div>As an added bonus, in lesson 3, the class included a whitework monogram on the lid. This was a welcome lesson as I always wanted to learn this technique. I learned how to plan my padding, where it should be thicker and where it should narrow, how to not crowd my stitching so that it would look nice and smooth. I also learned of a better way to join padded string, this would definitely be useful in other embroidery techniques like goldwork.</div><div><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First TUSAL of the year. My ORT jar matches the weather outside. All the
snow we didn't get in December, showed up in January. Last week I was
finally able to start making some headway on a few projects, super happy I
can finally get back on track. This weekend I also had my first finish of
the year, I'll share the details in the next post. For now here's a little
something I'd been working on to keep me busy during the month of January.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
During COVID, I really made use of my sewing machine for sewing various
projects, including masks. I decided to go through my box of scraps to see
what I can salvage and trimmed the edges to make them straight. All these
scraps were specifically from the covid masks I made for the family. The
cream fabric was used for the lining.

One technique I've been wanting to get back to is pojagi (보자기). I
really enjoyed it as it's great for keeping your hands busy,
while your brain is occupied with something else. To attach pieces together, it's a simple whip stitch and it's really fun figuring out placement.</div>

The original is lined with a willow green dupion silk, I'm probably going to go with a quilting fabric as it's easier to get locally.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoZWJyLj92jXpzTeQmewMvBQKZe8JkXKK629_zyznr18vGHDcwWrZgyG66QFX-ksTnGleHCVGBrpeLRZtjrkxoxW2CJ87F9opPEh_zPKOhV2jUjz1cpNtzSzGlZxtjVi1H1w1Y2S-gheMlKwJQPtypei4T73URImoQqvgob6sp_3os4spkbw9XYFnpuQ/s6000/IMG_1469.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4000" data-original-width="6000" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoZWJyLj92jXpzTeQmewMvBQKZe8JkXKK629_zyznr18vGHDcwWrZgyG66QFX-ksTnGleHCVGBrpeLRZtjrkxoxW2CJ87F9opPEh_zPKOhV2jUjz1cpNtzSzGlZxtjVi1H1w1Y2S-gheMlKwJQPtypei4T73URImoQqvgob6sp_3os4spkbw9XYFnpuQ/s320/IMG_1469.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><p>While stitching what will become the needlebook, I realized I don't dislike blackwork after all. The next three months will be very busy with classes. I'll be starting Japanese embroidery classes and revisiting cords technics, I want to make sure this piece gets completed before I got back to Grace. I'll also be getting back to Arabian Nights, the bead embroidery piece I was supposed to start in December. Lots coming, I just need to be patient.<p></p>D1-D2http://www.blogger.com/profile/03520044024915591288noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7213240850696097245.post-64423934923532979272023-01-01T10:00:00.004-05:002023-01-01T10:00:00.178-05:002023 Goals<p>Looking at my objectives for 2022, I kind of just let it go... Here's a drawing showing where I plan to have each color.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjI2ICXzPFj4aYkqGbGm1WvqYf0F5COzA7Qex7BtUua7Umw3hXuwigN-EeejleMbokn84WW3HhDqToDwqi--XYw8VtozwwHsIt0Cte3yC_z1v39fyB-h_S9MgS9X9kla0ufZqmLsDvMfqgFifZH_vMpb3Tt-WhIZ7GO20K5T30x6e5fj2zPZq29aeAcLw/s2159/Screenshot_20221222_184429_Samsung%20Notes.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1197" data-original-width="2159" height="354" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjI2ICXzPFj4aYkqGbGm1WvqYf0F5COzA7Qex7BtUua7Umw3hXuwigN-EeejleMbokn84WW3HhDqToDwqi--XYw8VtozwwHsIt0Cte3yC_z1v39fyB-h_S9MgS9X9kla0ufZqmLsDvMfqgFifZH_vMpb3Tt-WhIZ7GO20K5T30x6e5fj2zPZq29aeAcLw/w640-h354/Screenshot_20221222_184429_Samsung%20Notes.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><p>There are eight cords in this piece:</p><p></p><ol style="text-align: left;"><li>Double central braid in flat silk</li><li>Imitation wicker in twisted silk</li><li>Single central braid in twisted silk (2-color transition)</li><li>(real) Wicker in flat silk</li><li>Single central braid in flat silk</li><li>Imitation wicker in flat silk</li><li>Rein effect in twisted silk over couched gold</li><li>Double central braid in twisted silk transitioning into metal thread</li></ol><p></p><p>As this is a study piece, it contains one of every type of cord. However, you'll notice some cords are repeated. This is so we can experience stitching the cord using both a flat and twisted thread. Not only will the effect look different, but the stitching process will feel different. </p><p>The cords are stitched using the same foreground to background rule we always follow, ensuring we can leave a one point open space. This means the first cord to be stitched is cord #2, called imitation wicker. Since it's twisted thread, the stitching goes really fast. The slow part is those lambda's that go on top. We're meant to stitch it using gold thread, but for the purpose of learning the steps and right angles we used orange couching silk.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4H6ylh802-2UPcgCCryG06z3a3xPGtfB5uH5jHvuor3DPTyLREuLXu_ubUbNVzUPElz01HX9h-__Lky3neuBzvmd_-lrA4ZW375laHjTP72Bx6wBlINf6QyIxVLz6-EABxpZt3HIz6gpAaa4l6REvU7-5Q7tBLmKH7XFai-TUWSg_s0R16VB9Xk9ZIQ/s12000/20221104_103016.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="12000" data-original-width="9000" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4H6ylh802-2UPcgCCryG06z3a3xPGtfB5uH5jHvuor3DPTyLREuLXu_ubUbNVzUPElz01HX9h-__Lky3neuBzvmd_-lrA4ZW375laHjTP72Bx6wBlINf6QyIxVLz6-EABxpZt3HIz6gpAaa4l6REvU7-5Q7tBLmKH7XFai-TUWSg_s0R16VB9Xk9ZIQ/s320/20221104_103016.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>The second cord to stitch is another twisted thread, the single central braid (cord #3). I mixed in some gold (minus the core) with the wheat and red cord. It gives off just the hint of sparkle between the sugas. Cord #4 gave me some trouble as I needed to stitch backwards and the angle was just so awkward. Cord #5 is another single central braid but with flat silk. That gold gives it almost a brushed paint look that is just perfect.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDWdG4dc-9GsaW1nJkHSIG8lHTUf9-P82_3U96GzRB5uUHeE-1r8Wlc-NKGZynZxeNC_RfmRrLooH2sh0U_BwzjEvYrdYrrleWWi0O6ImNoLhMiHyXg343gk-FdQ6ZtwoeJTuhPy6pO8owtaR4sgo1qRT-hlbzc9sqAiwEK-7wRduvAI1z2-HTsiR4Sw/s6104/20221106_132624.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4143" data-original-width="6104" height="217" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDWdG4dc-9GsaW1nJkHSIG8lHTUf9-P82_3U96GzRB5uUHeE-1r8Wlc-NKGZynZxeNC_RfmRrLooH2sh0U_BwzjEvYrdYrrleWWi0O6ImNoLhMiHyXg343gk-FdQ6ZtwoeJTuhPy6pO8owtaR4sgo1qRT-hlbzc9sqAiwEK-7wRduvAI1z2-HTsiR4Sw/s320/20221106_132624.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">We skipped over cord #6 as it's the same technique as cord #2 but with flat silk. Instead we covered the last two cords. The rein effect (cord #7) is stitched over a foundation of couched gold using twisted thread. The idea is to make seven stitches and then skip seven stitches worth of space before starting the next stripe. Angle and spacing is very important, as always. The last cord #8 is a double central braid. It's the same cord as the very first one done in flat, but our teacher wanted to make sure we did the twisted version to ensure we understood the tightness of the twist. Although I'm a tight stitcher, it seems I'm not a tight twister. I had to do a few attempts before I got the right tension.</div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8UNRjWfGB2bz9Mgz-cnVeH5Gk5AzMqCWqlfYBFBSxoAattfQ2eTWiGSQv3oqOAvWikGIUlI_6YYj_PRuTLQqOAdOCczfOic0GwPxnECL80ROo2fPjHvRgw4hmTcHdZ_KUCngXYF7Tx_qgzsCHzZoudgOcVjQamtjmOMmlqROHfj3spCwAd7c_Ww3VgA/s6144/IMG_20221106_190147_710.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2903" data-original-width="6144" height="151" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8UNRjWfGB2bz9Mgz-cnVeH5Gk5AzMqCWqlfYBFBSxoAattfQ2eTWiGSQv3oqOAvWikGIUlI_6YYj_PRuTLQqOAdOCczfOic0GwPxnECL80ROo2fPjHvRgw4hmTcHdZ_KUCngXYF7Tx_qgzsCHzZoudgOcVjQamtjmOMmlqROHfj3spCwAd7c_Ww3VgA/s320/IMG_20221106_190147_710.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">After class, I attempted the flat silk version at home. Luckily, I just received my order from the Japanese Embroidery Center. Right on time too as the holidays are coming up and I'll be starting my annual two weeks stitching retreat. I'm going to mainly spend my time on <i>Himotaba </i>and hopefully <i>Eternal Grace</i> as well. I also need to start planning next year's objectives. I usually start a new piece on January 1st but I have no idea what I want to pull from my stash. I'll have a look through my horde.</div>D1-D2http://www.blogger.com/profile/03520044024915591288noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7213240850696097245.post-35071987249038250742022-12-22T17:35:00.003-05:002022-12-22T17:35:52.014-05:00Himotaba - Color Palette<p>If you've been following along for a while, you know color is my weak point. This piece was actually supposed to be treated as an etude and I wasn't planning on spending too much time thinking of color. Just use whatever is suggested by the JEC and be done with it. Here are where the problems start, there are two versions of <i>Himotaba</i>: a standard one and an extended version.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEg27SRxjMF3weccn2t7hnyETOhLyhoYBGkhKpUVyF2o4Y9XT4gwFdFIGov9FjeJycW-kpOlqZJTQTHBiU3KlCaJIT8Y5FqRQLpNJ-2qua36NfKg0vwS23mTPUtrpf0-NjQosN98EvTP95QnAHnyNHlpkFPYeHHu0QBpun7VSVVUkcZbLHL93tV5V1YHaA" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="490" data-original-width="592" height="331" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEg27SRxjMF3weccn2t7hnyETOhLyhoYBGkhKpUVyF2o4Y9XT4gwFdFIGov9FjeJycW-kpOlqZJTQTHBiU3KlCaJIT8Y5FqRQLpNJ-2qua36NfKg0vwS23mTPUtrpf0-NjQosN98EvTP95QnAHnyNHlpkFPYeHHu0QBpun7VSVVUkcZbLHL93tV5V1YHaA=w400-h331" width="400" /></a></div><br />I don't know about you but I find that stubby tassel really ugly, so I went with the extended version. More stitching to do but it will be worth it as the design feels more balanced. You'll notice that the extended version doesn't have a colored image even, thought they do have a suggested list of silks for it. I looked at the colors and it looked nice enough. Many of the colors are even used in <i>Hiogi </i>and my version of <i>Eternal Grace</i>, so I figured why not. Until I received the silks.<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhm3N5CF3if-BkcbprTP-YY6rdP6KP18C6BPM--YyZTnpFiQoo2MQuEkeaY5owh-yvx8jH2nDpr26cHTvMK3yGAAahdgZ_CvVHB-uJaJ_yh8DvePeb2PFRl3e7Tth_MwKBiZZZLXhZDoTPgc4RQYSaLuB9DeryL4pJ9ARIi36i9zpmEaOBNsimrK-IENA/s6000/IMG_1239.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4000" data-original-width="6000" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhm3N5CF3if-BkcbprTP-YY6rdP6KP18C6BPM--YyZTnpFiQoo2MQuEkeaY5owh-yvx8jH2nDpr26cHTvMK3yGAAahdgZ_CvVHB-uJaJ_yh8DvePeb2PFRl3e7Tth_MwKBiZZZLXhZDoTPgc4RQYSaLuB9DeryL4pJ9ARIi36i9zpmEaOBNsimrK-IENA/s320/IMG_1239.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><p>Although the colors look nice individually, once you put them together... my biggest issue is that orange. It's way too light, considering it's used for three cords. Place it next to the green and it becomes muddy. Then started my nightmare of having to pick colors</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjElwBL911hiM5J6-_D2GqdBeW30spqddU6Ls3XSANFhFoHYRBmx-a8ZyUEDEgXXeMM7Fe4Vv0mDo9PnBVEBSqs9Xu4cj992L0nh2h-oeHJjMYYAvOCktOuJILc8RiMkirff9F3aSiwGnbPaaxiBaCSnbILIpwhfX9bBihhkB5VqiqRhBms9zBxmcw9mw/s1024/IMG_1203-ANIMATION.gif" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="641" data-original-width="1024" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjElwBL911hiM5J6-_D2GqdBeW30spqddU6Ls3XSANFhFoHYRBmx-a8ZyUEDEgXXeMM7Fe4Vv0mDo9PnBVEBSqs9Xu4cj992L0nh2h-oeHJjMYYAvOCktOuJILc8RiMkirff9F3aSiwGnbPaaxiBaCSnbILIpwhfX9bBihhkB5VqiqRhBms9zBxmcw9mw/s320/IMG_1203-ANIMATION.gif" width="320" /></a></div><p>As you can see from the animation, I went through several iterations. Using my tablet to color the cords really helped me out in trying to visualize how it would look. There were a few conditions I needed to follow when picking colors:</p><p></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>I needed two contrasting colors to make a transition (3rd cord from the top), usually from dark to light</li><li>I needed another color transition, this time silk to metal (last cord)</li><li>the rein effect cord (2nd to last cord) is usually done in red over a foundation of couched gold. This could also be a foundation of couched silver and a different color would then be selected</li><li>this was a recommendation from my teacher: don't use too many colors as it will make the piece too busy. The original has five silk colors, plus gold. It's best not to go over that and in fact it would actually look nicer with less colors and instead use different shades.</li></ul><p></p><p>In my first iteration I took the main colors from Hiogi that I liked: red, pink, white, green, blue and purple. In the end, the only colors that survived is the red and pink which I had used in the pink cloud and cherry blossom on <i>Hiogi</i>.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikWw7xQeJzYBpBQx_LrrJyJmdBw_cYQwM7rnXlV-YEmID-uTlW8jbBiGNDZFwYCiJ9FodvQv8t9aQVtF-tTgGNT99oHnMcqrCMB8iKX2e8kG6cLNBxpVPF-SZY-Aua1NobgsH2fcVG_hVNU10ZnOLcLNqlhIqua5ju_QJdiD-OGbQtg5ddyxCrxconbg/s3648/IMG_20210205_115903.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2736" data-original-width="3648" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikWw7xQeJzYBpBQx_LrrJyJmdBw_cYQwM7rnXlV-YEmID-uTlW8jbBiGNDZFwYCiJ9FodvQv8t9aQVtF-tTgGNT99oHnMcqrCMB8iKX2e8kG6cLNBxpVPF-SZY-Aua1NobgsH2fcVG_hVNU10ZnOLcLNqlhIqua5ju_QJdiD-OGbQtg5ddyxCrxconbg/s320/IMG_20210205_115903.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><p>I was initially going to also use the same white, but it was a little too bright for the piece. I swapped it for a creamy/pinky white. I wanted green in there and after a lot of back and fourth, decided to use the same greens as my Grace's kimono.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpUCM9fR4yRR0xz3iSjZ9Fw0iqoRPlgekPh-yzNvNDegdP_iwutaNxG5ljReIfftooYHmcYlJ48QF2NpAbL81vDM60eR-CNPzYwuUh9_V_jIe-zsRvrsTdHX3anEStuG_Ub-BnzfE8caXqWyYO41FmhhiSN8nUcxVSVDNB_mNXwjOVKFnr_JnCJXZGPA/s4585/IMG_0723.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4585" data-original-width="4000" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpUCM9fR4yRR0xz3iSjZ9Fw0iqoRPlgekPh-yzNvNDegdP_iwutaNxG5ljReIfftooYHmcYlJ48QF2NpAbL81vDM60eR-CNPzYwuUh9_V_jIe-zsRvrsTdHX3anEStuG_Ub-BnzfE8caXqWyYO41FmhhiSN8nUcxVSVDNB_mNXwjOVKFnr_JnCJXZGPA/s320/IMG_0723.JPG" width="279" /></a></div><p>So I finally had my color palette, with the original as a backup. However, I wouldn't know until I actually started stitching whether the colors would go well together or not. It will depend on whether the silk is flat or twisted, am I combining it with metal thread, what cord will it be used for, what color will be next to it... It would just have to be a trial and error.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimdreAnAJkLRNyvWISBFW5sEKWhl7n42l9g7lEHZblKibZWQQYOHAFdcEnyZozUHFxe-G6Jjifsjef7FMCGjagi9Cn9fRIr_PBz9E31kvXd52kOGmT6973MyV405yjAJSQV-4LKjVGzqAa-txw3A01HqHBMcztfcDnLgzucX6TKwDO2vghnEev-17d5Q/s12000/20221014_133808.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="12000" data-original-width="9000" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimdreAnAJkLRNyvWISBFW5sEKWhl7n42l9g7lEHZblKibZWQQYOHAFdcEnyZozUHFxe-G6Jjifsjef7FMCGjagi9Cn9fRIr_PBz9E31kvXd52kOGmT6973MyV405yjAJSQV-4LKjVGzqAa-txw3A01HqHBMcztfcDnLgzucX6TKwDO2vghnEev-17d5Q/s320/20221014_133808.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>And for proof, on the second day of class, I realized that I will be missing a color. Not much has happened since my last post. I did start a new bead embroidery piece or was supposed to. I prepared the fabric on a frame in time for the prep class but sadly realized I couldn't attend the first day of class because it landed on the same night as the office Christmas party. So I've had to push back my official start to February. Here's a sneak peek at the project</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2Bciin8sqrHdUf0KVsLs4iJrcsAXi8pUBpwfbriZFJNMnDBvhpZnhHt1OmTpByekz_VYLcyEiitfj4Tu9WCzpe-YMo8hHe9HLifra4D24FgEh-cy1C-nQNhx7nGAMjO3V273cbf7TUDwCmpdj-9E8WrHWUqlJpxHP1-P1AR5etVYoYblUnlvptL4t-A/s12000/20221126_113209.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="6730" data-original-width="12000" height="179" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2Bciin8sqrHdUf0KVsLs4iJrcsAXi8pUBpwfbriZFJNMnDBvhpZnhHt1OmTpByekz_VYLcyEiitfj4Tu9WCzpe-YMo8hHe9HLifra4D24FgEh-cy1C-nQNhx7nGAMjO3V273cbf7TUDwCmpdj-9E8WrHWUqlJpxHP1-P1AR5etVYoYblUnlvptL4t-A/s320/20221126_113209.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The piece is called Arabian Nights and is from Margaret Lee's book the Art of bead embroidery. I've loved this piece for years but sadly the fabric is no longer available. Luckily Margaret had a few pieces leftover. I did get a little bit of stitching from the prep session but I'll hold off sharing as I haven't heard back from the teacher if she was happy with it or not. The zippered case on the left is where my bead piece will end up when it's done being stitched. I'm excited to try a new finishing method.</div></div>

As you know I switched things around starting Eternal Grace (phase 6) before cords (phase 5). The class was held with November but before I arrived to class, I had a few things that needed to be done first.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSe8lQ6I8AUj-G-tP2RBjZyL0ORCT0lZFc-hAIO4sG5EvwMqQa-QDubCxK-Z-wQ4u0ULY_UcxqXcm816vmZdOIV2JXYAwvZZ1aTQr3DW9-qaQOqgZ9la9YcNEJGi3guTqymVT34C6d2KIvlfQTZzWTBs2QxnT7bc5_qqn2V3NBs8LE9IELBKG5pD7YjA/s3648/IMG_20220311_133337.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2736" data-original-width="3648" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSe8lQ6I8AUj-G-tP2RBjZyL0ORCT0lZFc-hAIO4sG5EvwMqQa-QDubCxK-Z-wQ4u0ULY_UcxqXcm816vmZdOIV2JXYAwvZZ1aTQr3DW9-qaQOqgZ9la9YcNEJGi3guTqymVT34C6d2KIvlfQTZzWTBs2QxnT7bc5_qqn2V3NBs8LE9IELBKG5pD7YjA/s320/IMG_20220311_133337.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>I realize now that I don't have many pictures of the process, but it's really a lot of the same thing. It's basically outlining all cords using Japanese running stitch. They need to be outlined to make sure that they are 7mm thick all the way through. This is required as sometimes the framing will distort the design line. Stitches are between 4mm and 6mm long, but when you can't go around a curve you switch to a line of held thread. Time consuming but super easy and zen.</div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqXdASJYk0YTk1cqjY5nBUEEhvvaFivk2QP0Cpv8F3RpSs8X3qBp_pJCjhnFC8R7Mw6JBniVXuoCS9PyLkuquYDuxhhvKPRfdwjmHMRlTgxUkxc0AOdyWIP9bOFc9hbTQRLsWqPbkO0JnHUAdpM7tHFXDaC3pUvy9o6srP9ZGhLeYkCWPjcL2jud1_8g/s6000/IMG_1200.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4000" data-original-width="6000" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqXdASJYk0YTk1cqjY5nBUEEhvvaFivk2QP0Cpv8F3RpSs8X3qBp_pJCjhnFC8R7Mw6JBniVXuoCS9PyLkuquYDuxhhvKPRfdwjmHMRlTgxUkxc0AOdyWIP9bOFc9hbTQRLsWqPbkO0JnHUAdpM7tHFXDaC3pUvy9o6srP9ZGhLeYkCWPjcL2jud1_8g/s320/IMG_1200.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>One of the cords is called "rein effect", it's made up of twisted silk thread stitched over a base of couched metallic thread. <p>
I've been really bad at keeping up with my blog. I didn't realise so much time
had passed since my last post. A lot was going on between work and at home. I
even got to travel for work for the first time in 3 years. I've been stitching
here and there as you can see from my TUSAL reports for September and October.
</p>
<p>
I worked on the <i>Contrast Color Wheel</i>, that should be finishing very soon. I
hit a wall last week when I ran out of one of the materials in the kit. More
is on the way and I'm really looking forward to finishing this piece.

<p>
Grace is at a halt right now. It might very well be the reason why I've been
avoiding posting on the blog. I've set her aside for now and will get back to
her over the Christmas holidays (maybe). For now, I will concentrate on getting back
on track by working on phase 5 cords. We had a class the first weekend of
November, more on that soon.
</p>
<p>
I did start a little cross stitch project. Something easy for those days when
I don't want to work on a frame. It's Betsy Morgan's <i>Virgin Queen's Stitching
Wallet</i>. I kitted it together with a stitching friend. By doing that it allowed
us to save money on the threads as it doesn't need a full hank of each color
to stitch it. I liked the shape of it and the colors.</p>

</tbody></table><p>As I write this, I'm away from home. I'm spending two weeks in Vermont, working remote. I brought some stitching with me but haven't had the chance to get any of the projects out. I'm hoping to have time tomorrow as I only work in the morning on Fridays. Just sad it won't be my cords as I had to leave that big frame at home.</p>

Two weeks ago we had our exhibition. This normally occurs every two years, but
due to COVID it's been 3 years since our last one. The guild turned 50 last
year and since it's a big milestone we didn't want to miss, we decided to do a
50+1 celebration.

stitching on the Astrolabe so I can start September with a clean slate. In
lesson 7, the empty areas on the yellow felt are stitched.
</p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
On the outside portion, the area is filled in with couched Japan gold going
around. It looks really pretty but let me tell you my fingers were really sore
when I was done. The felt is really thick, so I sometimes had to really push
in with a needle. It was better to do this part over multiple sessions.
Especially the plunging!
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>
The other half, is my favorite. Using another weight of Japan gold, the thread
was braided and couched down to hold the pattern. It was a new technique for
me and I really enjoyed stitching it.

This was fun and frustrating and I had to stop myself at some point as

<div><br /></div>
I have a trick for that. If you find that you can't reach or can't safely trim
off the fabric, just take a black marker and color the white. When the entire
piece is put together, you won't be able to see the fabric anymore as the black
will just blend in.

With this, the journey ends. It wasn't that long ago since I started the first naval instrument, but it feels like years. The end game was always the Astrolabe. During my trip to Turkey in 2018, I saw an Atsrolabe at the museum and thought that would make an amazing goldwork project. Imagine my surprise when Cythina Jackson posts her goldwork Astrolabe. Using what I learned in this class I hope to stitch it one day. One day... The rest of the lessons on the Astrolabe cover the stitching of the plate and
final shape of the casing that would contain it. This is embroidered on black
fabric with white cotton fabric for backing. I started with only stretching
the white fabric and transfer the design using a chalk pencil.

The inner circle line that is drawn in the center of the felt is covered with
string padding. Having done this on the Rete, I did a better job at joining
the ends.

Much like the Rete, the string padding is covered in cutwork. This time
instead of stitching at an angle, it's put in straight down.

I was crossing my finger the entire time I was stitching hoping to get a
complete pattern all around but sadly it didn't work out. The pattern is five
gold and one black. If I had known in advance, I would have made one or two
random grouping four gold and one black, hoping that by the time I got back to
the beginning it would make a seamless join. Those random smaller grouping
would be less noticeable than what I have right now.

The last step in lesson 6 is to add a wall to the rim. The inside is covered
with plate and the outside in crimped plate.

<p>I'm now midway through lesson 7. I'm hoping to get all the embroidery completed by the end of this weekend. If it works out, all that would be left is cutting out all the parts and putting them together for lesson 8. These are things I can do after work.</p>
